A word from God, post reading Joshua
Preface: So I’m reading Joshua, right, and Emma Anna Amy and I have all been reading it together, but more recently because we are all in different timeframes of life/business, so we’ve been reading on our own and said we would come together at the end of reading and talk about it all and looking into fear versus soverignty (different note for a different time). Amy had said, and Emma and Anna agreed, that after chapter 10ish, it gets kind of hard to stay locked into the reading because it’s a bunch of names and listing of what inheritance went to who and whatnot so she was like I’m having a hard time being interested in it (which, we’ve all been there, haven’t we). So, as I was reading this morning, I’m like okay, I’m coming up on chapter 11, finishing it up, reading chapter 12, and realizing that I myself am starting to just skim the words on the page. I’m like alright, here goes, I’m entering into the land of skimming pages. Lol. I try to preface any reading I have with Psalm 119:18, open my eyes, that I may behold wonderous things from your word, Lord! I pray to have an enlightened heart and mind and spirit when it comes to anything of the Word, and pray against any sort of apathy or boredom or distraction, because those things are bound to come from our flesh.
So, I get to chapter 12 and it’s getting to the list of the 31 kings that Joshua defeated and I’m starting to skim. And I was like you know what, Lord, I don’t want to just skim this. So I’m like, Lord, just enlighten whatever you want me to hear this morning, just let me know. Speak to me. And let me tellllll you he answered in literally the next sentence, chapter 13 verses 1 and 2.
We must extinguish the lies of limitation and disqualification because of age. Or because of our experiences in evolution of stages of life.
1 Joshua 13:1-2
“Joshua was old and advanced in years, and the Lord said to him, ‘You are old and advanced in years, there’s nothing left for you, you’re washed up, and you’ve drained your potential,’”
NO. God would never say that to us. Those are all lies.
the Lord said to him, “You are old and advanced in years, and there remains yet very much land to possess. This is the land that yet remains: …” and He continues to lay out the work that God has for Joshua next.
On the other hand, the Lord says let no one despise you for your youth, but set an example for the believers in your speech, your conduct, your love, faith and purity [1 Timothy 4:12]
Example: towards the end of college, you get hit with oh man you’re so old! Unc, washed up, etc. Mostly jokes of course, and taken as a joke, but partial potential to feel like it’s the truth. And, relative to the college population, sure, you are up there! 22 years old, phew, ancient! Haha but then you enter the “real world”, you get your first job, you feel that imposter syndrome sneak in. You don’t know anything, you’re starting out, it sinks in that, you’re only 22, what do you know!
Satan will use wherever we are in life, whether we are relatively young or old, to feel too young or too old to be qualified, accepted, capable, or whatever it may be, because he wants to discourage us in the call we have to be zealous for Gods good works.
Now, let’s back up here. Chapter 11:12-15, it’s talking about how Joshua was doing the thing. Just as the Lord had commanded Moses his servant, so Moses commanded Joshua, and so Joshua did. He (Joshua) left nothing undone of all that the Lord had commanded. Nothing to question. Joshua was so obediant and was just going after zealous completion of the Lord’s work. So, that in itself was already cool and encouraging and it’s like, yeah, that’s what we should do too. But we get to chapter 13 and God is like listen, you’re old man. You’ve lived a lot of life. And listen up, I’ve got more for you. You’re not done yet. He goes on and is like this is what I’ve divided for you, here are the inheritances, here is the plan, really giving him the lay of the land. Which, could be discouraging for Joshua like, man really, after all I’ve done, you want more from me?? But, it is so cool, that no matter where we are in life, no matter what we have or have not completed, God says, I have more for you, so that you can complete a good work for my kingdom and my glory. My son, my daughter, do I have a cool thing for you to be a part of! I have this visual of God being like a coach or a military officer, speaking to their respective teams. Here’s the goal. Here’s the land. Here’s the game plan. Let’s get to work.
