Agape Love
Agape love. God’s love. What is it?
Notes from a podcast I listened to a bit ago - “The Judah Smith Interview”
“If you could summarize the love of God in a definition, how would you package it?”
Love is His essence. It is the essence of who God is.
He reveals himself as love and grace.
The Scripture indicates there are some things God brings and there are some things he is. So he doesn’t bring it, He doesn’t add it. He doesn’t speak it. He is it. Love.
Looking into Hebrew and Greek and the original language in Scripture — run into concept of Agape love.
Agape - concept of unconditional love.
“I love our culture because we’re obsessed with love, but we’re obsessed with all kinds of love. Most of the time it’s low level forms of love, and not saying that low level is bad. It’s just not the zenith of love and the zenith of love is this concept of love that is unconditional. That is, love that does not necessitate reciprocity. It does not need to be reciprocated.”
That is unfathomable for us.
“So, I love our culture because we sing songs like, no matter what I love you. But, in truth, the only agape that exists in the universe by definition, in its full plenary form is from God. And the only person in the history of mankind who has ever stepped foot on this earth that has been the full and complete representation of agape in Jesus Christ.
And I am in love with him for that very reason. I can’t get enough of him. I can’t talk about him enough. I can’t think about him enough. I can’t fathom him enough. He has changed my brain, He has changed my body, He’s changed my priorities, He’s changed my passions.`No matter what, he keeps loving me and I don’t deserve it. I don’t deliver, I don’t follow through. and I didn’t follow through on what I committed to at the altar with God. You know, I say I’ll give you everything, I’ll give you everything God. And you know, give me 48 hours and I’m not giving him everything.
And he still keeps loving me, full of grace and truth. He is the definition of agape. Love is Jesus and Jesus is love. Not all of our definitions and forms of love, but as he defines it. And as he defines it in its simplest form, it is unconditional. It is love that will not stop and will not end based on pedigree, portfolio, or anything of the likes.”
There are some things we cannot wrap our minds around. Space. Time. Agape love. We are able to get glimpses, little tastes, of what these are, what they entail, but a true deep understanding is not fathomable for us as humans. That’s when we leave it to our divine God. To our Father, Jesus Christ, great and miraculous, loving and kind, true and just. And this is where I take a step back from even trying to wrap my mind around it completely and say God, thank you. I am gracefully humbled by my miniscule mind in comparison to your great glorious power. Your love. And you have this glory, this love, this power, with my name on it. My??? name??? Unconditional. True. Deep.
Thank you for the agape love you have for us, Jesus.
